Jaden and Ana Named 2018-19 IowaSLI Leaders

Jaden Deal, 17, of Norwalk, IA has been named president of the Iowa Student Learning Institute for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.

The Iowa Student Learning Institute (IowaSLI), is a student-led, non-profit organization based in Des Moines. For five years IowaSLI has hosted student leadership events for K-12 students across Iowa and has held lobby days at the capitol.

A rising senior at Norwalk High School, Deal also serves on the Student Leadership Council of Iowa Safe Schools. This past legislative cycle, he successfully advocated for a policy that was bipartisanly sponsored in the Iowa House to allow student representatives on local school boards.

Deal will serve alongside vice president Ana Eagan, 17, of Norwalk, IA. Eagan was voted senior class president by her classmates and aspires to be a teacher after graduation.

“Students are the most underrepresented voice in today’s education system. As students, we are in classes upwards of 35 hours every week and deserve a say in what happens in those classrooms,” says Deal.

Deal and Eagan will direct IowaSLI events and programs that give students the opportunity to learn, network with like-minded students from around the state, and let their own voices be heard.

With recent uptick in student activism across the country, Iowa is not alone in students taking a stand on their beliefs.

“I’m excited to get more involved in the organization after seeing five years of successful student organizing in Iowa. The work we have to build on is truly remarkable,” says Eagan.
